What’s Light Guides?

April 26, 2024

The light guides are designed to optimize the light transport efficiency, maintaining high brightness and low power consumption, particularly important on portable battery powered products. SILVER OPTICS’s wide expertise in advanced optical design and manufacturing enables intricate light guides products to be developed, which provide functional and aesthetic illumination in a wide range of applications.

Complex light guides shapes can be developed to follow the contours of the product styling or deliver light from remote light sources to the illumination target surfaces.

In addition, SILVER OPTICS can integrate other features and functions to the lightguides component to ease assembly and support other components in the product. This helps to reduce the number of components in the product, improves product reliability and reduces cost in complex product assemblies.

The final mechanical lightguides design is quite often patterned with laser etched light control structures, machined into the production mold surfaces. These light control structures further enhance the aesthetic appearance and function of the illumination to give the final evenness, balance and efficiency in the light transmission.

LED Light Guide Research &Development

The SILVER Optics consistently participates in research and development projects. Our customers benefit from our state of the art. The constant exchange of knowledge with institutions and research institutes creates skills and know-how, which we include into the optimization of precision polymer components.

light Guide – Innovative backlights; light guide, plastic optics

The demand for backlights for backlighting of displays or controls continues to grow. The users want more freedom to the design of the geometry with the highest possible quality. There is an increasing demand for
that can be shapes free and also allow breakthroughs. Current processes for background lighting, such as transverse coupling-fiber, LEDs and electroluminescent films reach their limits.

Standard formats are only available without breakthroughs or the durability is too short and the electrical activation is to complex. In addition the cost requirements can usually not be realized. This issue also the company Plastics Engineering , a medium-sized automotive supplier of high decorative components and assemblies from is confronted with.

In a joint research project the two companies developed the entire production chain for transverse coupling-fiber developed subsequently successfully, that now custom backlights can be produced for different applications. Technical Director and Managing Partner of SILVER Optics Thomas says: “These backlights are flat design, allowing great freedom in shaping and breakthroughs and are also electrically easy to control.” Here the isotropy and homogeneity of the brightness is ensured. This means, regardless of the viewing angle, the brightness of the backlight always remains constant.

Both companies focused on the adaptability. The backlight light guide should meet the high technical requirements, and can be produced efficiently with consistently high quality in the series later. After a development period of a little less than two years finally all requirements are fully met. Serial production could start.SILVER Optics now cover the entire development and manufacturing chain to serial production.
